In a vote last week the House voted 217 to 213 to narrowly approve legislation to repeal and replace major parts of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). As Republicans move a step closer to deliver on their campaign promises to repeal Obamacare they still have an uphill battle to get it through the Senate.
While facing profound uncertainty in the Senate, where some Republican senators rejected it, they are open to working on a new version of the bill to try and push through. President Trump boasted Thursday, “Yes, premiums will be coming down; yes, deductibles will be coming down, but very importantly, it’s a great plan.”
With that being said it is up for debate that it is truly a great plan for all Americans. So what are the details pertaining to the plan that was passed last week well we want you to take a look and let us know if you think “it’s a great plan.”
Here are some of the main points to take away from the proposed bill:
1. Lose of the ban on lifetime limits on benefits, including hospitalization and prescription drugs. If your state opts out your insurer could cut the benefit to save money.
2. State waivers that could eliminate the mandate to cover mental health and maternity.
3. The elimination of federal subsidies for people who can’t afford insurance. Instead they will provide tax credits but they are low compared to the cost of coverage.
4. No individual mandate to purchase health insurance. This will lower the risk pool and therefore cause premiums to go up. Insurance of any kind needs a large number of people, including most who won’t need to take advantage, to afford coverage for those who have claims.
5. Republicans claim that their plan will protect those with pre-existing conditions, they didn’t indicate that the plans would be affordable.
6. Older enrollees could be charged as much as five times more than younger enrollees. This could price out a large number of seniors who need coverage.
7. Medicaid expansion would end by 2020.
8. Congress would be exempt from the new Trumpcare. A bill has been proposed to the House to fix this but it remains to be seen if they will pass it or not. So as a reminder we all need to keep a close eye on this as it is pushed to the Senate to vote on.
Don’t be afraid to reach out to your local, state, and federal representatives to let them know what you think of this new healthcare bill that is being touted as a replacement to Obamacare.
